Building a Complete UTV Recovery Kit
A winch does the pulling, but it's only one piece of a working recovery system. It needs a winch plate or mount tied into the frame or bumper, along with the right winch line and anchoring equipment. Most riders run synthetic winch rope today, though steel cable still has a place on rocky terrain. A tree saver strap and soft shackles give you safer anchoring options, while a snatch block can double your pulling power when needed. Plenty of stuck situations never need the winch. Traction boards can help you get unstuck without using the winch, especially on loose or slippery terrain. With a second vehicle, a kinetic rope gives a smoother pull than tow straps, which are built for steady towing. Recovery kits from brands like Rhino USA, Mojab, and ARB bundle several of these pieces into one bag, making it easier to carry the gear you need without taking up much cargo space. Check the breaking strength on every piece, because a recovery is only as strong as its weakest link.

FAQ
What recovery gear should every UTV carry?
At minimum, carry a tree saver strap, a couple of soft shackles, a kinetic rope or recovery strap, and a pair of gloves. If you run a winch, add a snatch block and a winch extension line so you can reach more anchors and pull at better angles. A recovery kit is the easiest way to cover the basics in one bag.
Should I use a winch or a recovery strap to get unstuck?
A recovery strap or kinetic rope needs a second vehicle to do the pulling. A winch works when you're alone, as long as a solid anchor like a tree, a rock, or another rig sits within reach of your winch line. Many riders carry both so they're covered either way.
How do I recover a stuck UTV safely?
Attach only to rated recovery points or the winch mount, never to a tie-down loop or a suspension part. Lay a line damper or heavy jacket over the middle of the rope, keep everyone well clear of the pull, and use slow, steady power instead of spinning the tires. Inspect every strap, rope, and shackle for cuts or wear before you rig it.
What's the difference between a kinetic rope and tow straps?
A kinetic rope stretches and stores energy, which gives a smoother snatch recovery with less shock on both vehicles. Tow straps have very little stretch and are built for steady towing. Using one to jerk a vehicle out of mud puts a hard shock load on the recovery points at both ends.
Do I need an air compressor on the trail?
If you air down for sand, snow, or rock, a portable air compressor lets you get back to proper tire pressure before you hit harder ground. It also lets you top off a slow leak on the trail instead of limping home.
What does a snatch block do in a winch recovery?
A snatch block is a pulley that your winch line runs through. Anchored with a tree saver and a soft shackle, it can roughly double your pulling power or change the direction of the pull when you can't get a straight line to the anchor.
Are soft shackles better than steel shackles?
Soft shackles are lighter, have no pin to lose, and are less dangerous than a steel shackle if something fails under load. Steel D-ring shackles still work well and hold up better to abrasion and heat.
