Every side-by-side relies on its drivetrain to turn engine output into movement. The system runs from the UTV transmission through the drive belts, clutches, driveshaft, differential, and axles before reaching the wheels. Weak links show up fast when you're hauling a load, riding sand, or pushing more power than stock ever intended.
Most UTVs use a CVT, which relies on a pulley system with two clutches to shift gear ratios automatically based on engine speed and load. The belt is the most common failure point. A worn or undersized drive belt can't handle peak torque from a modified machine, so upgrading to a heavier-duty belt is often the first move riders make. Machines like the Polaris RZR Pro R push serious horsepower, and that's where clutch kits, billet transmission cases, and upgraded bearing sets become essential.
Some newer UTVs skip the CVT. The Can-Am Maverick R ships with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission that uses two clutches and an electronic gearbox to pre-select the next gear before the shift happens. It is gear-driven with no belt and has its own dedicated cooling system. The Honda Pioneer uses Honda's own DCT, which also offers automatic and manual paddle-shift modes.
